Prior to IV sedation, patients should:

  • Wear loose fitting clothing that is comfortable.

  • Remove jewelry and nail polish.

  • Avoid eating or drinking 6-8 hours prior to the dental procedure.

  • Avoid taking any medications prior to the procedure (unless previously approved by your dentist).

  • Alert your dentist and or Anesthesiologist of any significant changes in medical history.

  • Bring a companion with you to our office.

What does conscious sedation feel like?

Sedation effects differ from patient to patient. The most common feelings are drowsiness and relaxation. Once the sedative takes effect, negative emotions, stress, or anxiety may also gradually disappear.

You may feel a tingling sensation throughout your body, especially in your arms, legs, hands, and feet. This may be accompanied by a heaviness or sluggishness that makes it feel harder to lift or move your limbs.

You may find that the world around you slows down. Your reflexes are delayed, and you may respond or react more slowly to physical stimuli or to conversation.

Some common side effects of conscious sedation may last for a few hours after the procedure, including:

  • drowsiness

  • feelings of heaviness or sluggishness

  • loss of memory of what happened during the procedure (amnesia)

  • slow reflexes

  • low blood pressure

  • headache

  • feeling sick

IV sedation can be used for a significant amount of  dental procedures includin multiple tooth extractions, routine wisdom teeth removal or multiple root canals and often in the case of Implant surgeries like the ALLON4 and ALLON6 as well as Sinus elevation.

Because IV sedation is the strongest form of conscious sedation, patients should expect to have moderate to high levels of amnesia during the procedure.

After your dental procedure

Patients may be slightly drowsy following IV sedation; however, the drowsiness should subside within several hours following the procedure. We recommend that a patient undergoing sedation dentistry is accompanied by a friend or family member to assist and help after the procedure. patients should avoid strenuous activity, taking medications (unless approved by the dentist), drinking alcohol, making important decisions and operating cars or heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after the IV sedation.

Complications from IV sedation are very rare, but patients and their companions should be sure to contact the dentist immediately with any condition that arises following the procedure. The most likely effect is having local irritation at the IV site.
